Character History:
Character Personality:
Heiji is some what of a typical high school student. Give or take a few of his unique quirks, for instance, he's more intelligent than most boys his age. He eidetic memory that allows him to have a library of trivial (and sometimes media based) knowledge. Anywhere from the process of decomposition, to facts about baseball are at his disposal.
Where most people find a corpse frightening and become squeamish, Heiji is first to jump to it and decipher the cause of death or if it's even dead. Mysteries fascinate him like kids to an interesting video game. If a case emanates you can bet Heiji will be there ready to solve it. He could be described to be impulsive and even a bit absent-minded at times. His father described Heiji as so: "He's like a kid runnin' on pure instinct."
Like Kudo, Heiji's intelligence is unmistakable. With or without Kudo's help, he can interpret clues, predict motives and reveal the culprit all in a days work. Complicated puzzles and strange clues aren't safe from his deductions. With this intelligence is clever thought process is his ability to create clues of his own. Aware of much knowledge and facts, he can determine how long a body has been dead, what killed them, and (after a bit of investigating) how.
Heiji lacks etiquette for higher authority. When his father (knowingly mind you) punched Heiji to the ground, he belittled him and told him to go home because this case wasn't his business. Instead Heiji rebelled and continued working on it despite his father's action. He also has a knack for calling his mom old woman, and he doesn't even properly address Mouri with an honorific which is considered rude in Japanese culture.
Additionally, and unlike Kudo, Heiji is more hot-blooded. He's quick to lose his temper, patience, or otherwise become agitated. While he can keep his composure most of the time, it's still reveals itself enough to be notable. Hakuba actually berated Heiji for his imprudence regarding a crime scene about how he disrupted the crime scene. However, this did not fully compromise the deduction as he was still able to figure out the killer. The culprit herself complimented on him it. Saying she didn't know detectives like him still existed. Also while solving cases, Heiji refers to corpses as stiffs.
At first, Heiji was rather negligent if a culprit killed themselves after being found out. During a case with Kudo where Kudo prevented a woman from committing suicide, Heiji said. "Maybe we shoulda let her die." In which Kudo responded "A detective who corners someone with logic, but lets them commit suicide...is no different from a murder." Since then, Heiji has followed this, and during another case where a culprit was going to shoot himself in the head, Heiji intervened and wound up taking a bullet to the abdomen because of it. Ultimately he will no longer allow the guilty kill themselves.
While not always applied, Heiji is excessively expressive. An extroverted soul if you will. He is often seen prompting others (or Kudo) to do things, instigating others, and lightly playing off somewhat serious manners. When in a good mood, he'll have a huge grin on his face (though not the same kind of grin he gets when he's solving/solved a case) and almost comes off a bouncy. This behavior only amplified when he's trying to sneak around the others to eagerly speak to Kudo. Of course this goes without saying, that no matter how intelligent he is. Heiji is only human and makes mistakes. He will sometimes (more like all the time) address "Conan" as Kudo. Ran will over hear this, and Heiji has to quickly cover his tracks so she doesn't find out.
One way to explain his overly expressive behavior is when he is annoyed. He calls a lot of the people around him "morons" or "idiots". Not just that, but he'll yell at them too. Heiji called his own mother an idiot. When Mouri and Ran went banging on his door during his nap he opened it to yell at them. Also when Ran and Kazuha, or even just Ran alone pester and nag him he'll scream at them about how annoying they are.
At first Heiji was snarky to Kudo and looking always trying to out preform him. Sometimes he still act in this way, but the more Heiji bonds with Kudo the closer they become. Now the west side detective will go out of his way to not only protect Kudo from harms way, but help him too. Such things include offering to help him out when converting between his original self and child self. Another when Kudo called him asking if he could get information on an individual named Eisuke. Heiji even likes to refer Kudo as his friend, rival or not. (Though they do act like friends.)
This trait also applies to Kazuha, a childhood friend of Heiji's. He is naturally overprotective of her and will do irrational things to see to it that she goes unharmed. When they were in a hanging off the cliff side by a branch Kazuha wanted Heiji to live on. In attempt to force him to let her go he stabbed his hand with an arrow, but he refused such action. Another during the time they both were held hostage in an attic. Heiji continually exasperate the female lawyer and so he was the only one physically harmed. (Heiji had placed such great faith in Kudo that Kudo would be the one to find and save them.)
He makes it very clear and very prominent that he doesn't believe in the misconception of curses, magic, and ghosts. To him, it's a trick and there must be a logical explanation for it. Folklore and scary stories hardly scare him because he doesn't believe them to exist. Of course when uncovering such nonsense with truth, how can he believe it? He and Kudo share this trait in common. Hell, when they were at a magic show with the girls they were theorizing explanations as to how the magician was pulling the stunts on the stage. If someone claims otherwise it is 100% likely you're not going to convince him of it being true.
Although he does make it a point to carry around a lucky charm that Kazuha made herself. While he doesn't take the charms seriously (as far as he's willing to admit), he is considerate enough to keep it around because Kazuha is a special person to him. He will sometimes blame the charms on his horrible luck as he is often injured during the cases he solves with Kudo. It got to the point where his mom went undercover to see if Mouri was fit enough to continue having her son around because his injuries escalated.
Heiji is painfully oblivious to the concept of love. He's not very good at understanding women either. The most he can unveil is one time in Okinawa with Kudo, the two were deducting bathing suits based on exterior composure and appearance of women. Anything deeper than that and he's lost. Kazuha will continually give him hints to her feelings for him, but he never catches on. It doesn't help that he is insisted on them being childhood friends, in fact almost like brother and sister. He even mistook a 'nervous almost confession' with because they're 'feeling hungry.' When in reality their feelings run deeper than that and more intimate. Heiji is also oblivious to his own feelings for her. There were some moments where he wanted to confess to her, but chicken out half way and changed the subject to something ridiculous in comparison.
One thing you'll notice about Heiji every time you see him, and I mean every time, is the fact that he wears a beige baseball cap with a dark visor. On it is the abbreviation "SAX". (Parody of SOX) Having said that, baseball is his favorite sport and he follows it actively. You will almost never see him without his cap. The cap is even used as an instrument. Like during cases, if he flips his hat forward, where the bill becomes in front and worn properly, it means he's close to solving a case.
Powers and Abilities:
STRENGTHS:
Physical -
Heiji is in no sense weak. If need be, he can pull around own weight and even the weight of others. Heiji is well built, athletic and in shape. Often, due to being a detective, he is forced to sprint from location to location. Even having done so it's unlikely for him to become winded after all of it. He also bears the strength a boy his age would have. Maybe even a little stronger than that given his second hobby. It's not easy to over power him (but by no means impossible.)
For a high school boy, Heiji is very enduring. Despite having a bullet wound in his gut, he was still able to carry a full grown man on his back out of a burning building and save him from death. This caused much stress and worsened his injury but for the most part remained conscious. He only insisted he rest because he didn't sleep well the night before. Dis-concerning his obvious pain, he was actually fine.
Like his father, Heiji participates and enjoys the sport of kendo. He is exceptionally good at it and admired among his peers because of it. Because of it, he has a lot of endurance and upper body strength despite looking lanky. His previous loss he refuses to count because the medic canceled the duel due to Heiji's inability to stop bleeding. Nevertheless, its unwise to strike at him and expect to hit. Likewise, if he has something to hit you with, it's going to hurt and could quite possibly end up fatal.
Mental/Emotional -
Heiji is intelligent, keen, and clever. Solving puzzles, mysteries, and deciphering codes is his forte. His aptitude for this sort of thing is almost like second nature to him. There's practically nothing he can't interpret or figure out. Additionally his memory is solid and near perfect. Upon brief glimpses he can recall things, passages, phrases perfectly. This is what makes him such a great detective and Kudo's rival. It's hard to fool him in general.
Heiji is confident, and optimistic. He's not easy to depress. His eager attitude drives him. His sheer train of thought is enough to get him pumped for anything (unless it's boring.) If a challenge presents itself before him he will take it on and continue to do so until it's solved. He is head strong to say the least.
WEAKNESSES:
Physical -
He's in no way immortal. Being human, he is vulnerable to the reality of injuries. He has a few scars to prove this. The one behind his ear he obtained from his kendo tournament. The back of his right hand from the arrow that Kazuha stabbed with, and supposed one on his abdomen where he got shot while stopping a suicide. He is every bit capable of receiving more injuries just as these ones. In fact he's notorious for getting hurt after all.
Kendo is meant for armed offense (or defense depending on how it's used.) Which doesn't necessarily mean it will protect him even if he knows it. The fact that it's only useful when he has something to attack with proves that his abilities are strongly limited. Otherwise he would probably be able to avoid some of the causalities he encounters during his cases.
Mental/Emotional -
Heiji is horribly conceited and way too confident in his ability sometimes. This leads him to run around blind and has potentially threatened his safety because of it. Also his lack for through before speaking has lead him to nearly give away Kudo's cover almost every time he's with the other detective. If not for his quick saves Ran might have figured it out.
While he is very smart and keen, Heiji has his own special brand of obliviousness and ignorance. Like he can't understand the concept of love or bring in love very well. Perhaps part of it has to do with his age, in either case it's not one of his strongest suits and he doesn't wildly advertise this fact. It seems he only presents this problem to Kudo, secretly asking questions for his answers and opinions regarding the topic.

Heiji was considering the possibility that it could have ties with human trafficking among other things; however, all of his theories were missing one vital source. Evidence, without it, his theories were nothing more than what they were: theories.
Unlike the kept composure of his companion, Heiji lost his temper more easily when it came to lack of clues. He easily spent a good majority of his day scoping out entire buildings searching every crest and corner imaginable. When it came to things as serious as a case, Heiji was thorough. Missing even the smallest clue could compromise the case and there were too many people at stake to let that happen. All his efforts seemed in vain when he came up empty handed.
“Damn it!” How was he supposed to move past this when he couldn’t even exploit the current problem at hand? This was going to take longer than his average case. Heiji wasn’t sure how long it was going to take, but it didn’t deter him from making it his goal to solve it. That being said, he would return to Kudo and brief him on his findings, or lack thereof in hopes that they could bounce ideas off each other. If anyone could help him get to the bottom of this, it was Kudo, his equal and his friend.
